International brands too are cashing

Brands like Zara, the largest brand in the world, H&M, and Marks & Spencer are doing extremely well with their new merchandise and fashion garments in the Indian retail space. Now there are six collections in one year and designs are changed almost every two weeks. But with the influx of branded apparels, the women’s wear market has been growing at 10 per cent. Of this, the domestic consumption was about $68 billion with apparels accounting for $50 billion. Earlier, 39 per cent each of this $68-billion domestic consumption was going to women’s and menswear and 22 per cent to kidswear..Women’s branded garments are expanding the size of the Indian textile and apparel market, and also edging out the menswear which has hitherto led the markets.According to him, "There is so much appetite for fashion that earlier like the rest of the world we had only four seasons — spring, summer, autumn and winter.Early entrants like Levi’s, Adidas, UCB, Vero Moda are also doing extremely well in the country. Inteational brands too are cashing in on the growing branded fashion market and have forayed into the weste wear market.Change in women’s wear has also to do with the aspirations of the Indian women with growing economic independence, to buy fashionable clothing.Mr Samuel’s Birla Cellulose has a unique tieup with 51 top women’s wear brands like Van Husen, Global Desi, who use their fabric Liva. We get new trends 14 months ahead of the season. So, by 2018, women’s branded apparel will capture 41 per cent of the $68 billion domestic textile market, and menswear will have 38 per cent.Manohar Samuel, president, marketing and business development, Birla Cellulose, says the total textile market size in 2014 was $108 billion.Monte Carlo’s executive director Sandeep Jain also says that they were gearing up to meet the demand for women’s fashions, which grew by over 30 per cent this summer while men’s fashions grew just 20 per cent.

Bias cut silhouettes are in vogue

Designer Ka Malhotra adds, "Synthetic nets have evolved with lycra blends to make it stretchable and thus you can opt for those styles too. Prior to 1809, nets were made by hand but in that year a new machine produced knotted nets so it became known as hand-knotted fabrics, but only a few people could distinguish between them. Some trends may have been a fad, but net as a trend has always been a classic, an evergreen. Be it pret or couture, Indian or weste silhouette, net fabrics and net dresses have always been in vogue. Nets not only provide a breathability quotient but can be made into structural and sculpted forms as well.

The filet net is made with a square mesh whereas maline net is used in millinery and is very fine. Crochet nets, laser cut nets, plain nets and textures on nets which look like permanent pleats have helped sartorial gurus create magic on classic as well as contemporary silhouettes."Designer cordura fabric manufacturers Zulekha Shariff agrees and suggests, "Knowing your body type is important. Earlier nets were made by hand-knotting yas at each point of intersection to produce a specific geometric patte. Or, you could also add extra nets to your garments to make a statement, and experiment with transparent backs, placement appliqués and flowy silhouettes. She adds, "Minimalism is in, so utilise the trend as much as you can.Designer Neeta Lulla asserts, "Net fabrics have always been a vital element in the fashion industry. If you’re an apple shape, show off your legs and create an illusion at the waist; if you are blessed with a pear shape, draw attention to the top half of your body; if you’re an hourglass figure then you can pretty much wear anything and draw attention to your waist; and if you are a rectangle shape then emphasis your legs and shoulders. In the fashion industry we have seen a variety of nets that’s been used to create all different sorts of garments.Since the early 70s, nets like laces have played a crucial part in creating remarkable fashion statements. Fishnet is a coarse open-mesh construction created by knotting the mesh in a manner similar to a fisherman’s knot. Tulle is a fine, stiff hexagonal net made from silk or nylon yas.

Bias cut silhouettes are in vogue for plus sizes and stringy slip and A-line silhouettes are ideal for slim bodies."Elaborating about various kinds of nets that are available, designer Ridhi Arora says, "Nets can be broadly classified as bobbinet, fishnet, filet, maline or tulle. Choose according to the occasion and the body type. It is very similar to bobbinet but lighter in weight than bridal illusion; some references do not separate bobbinet and tulle. It is generally used for trimming. Digital printing has taken over pretty much everything and a large variety of digital printing on nets is available in the market as well.". Keep the accessorising to a bare minimum and opt for pastel coloured outfits. Bobbinet is a hexagonal mesh that may be very thin and transparent (bridal illusion) or fairly coarse and opaque (casement cloth), depending on the ya count of the material used to produce it." Talking about styling a garment with nets, designer Amy Billimoria says, "Styling a net dress is really simple." The blocked sheer look in net dresses is a trend worth experimenting too, avers designer Ritika Arya Jain. For a day look, wear a basic slip dress instead of going for metres and metres of fabric to drape.
